FIRE SAFETY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Where do I install a smoke detector?

A: You should install at least one smoke detector on each level of your home. A smoke
detector should also be installed outside each sleeping area.

Q: When should I change the batteries in my smoke detector?

A: Replace batteries twice a year. A good idea is to change the batteries when you change
the clocks in the Spring and Fall.

Q: How do I schedule a tour of a Fire Station?

A: You can contact fire station 1 at (815)748-8469 and an administrative assistant will
check for calendar openings.

Q: Why do firefighters break windows and cut holes in roofs during a fire?

A: Smoke and heat from a fire moves upward and then spreads outward. Removing windows
and opening up roofs allows the heat and smoke to escape. By doing this it actually
prevents more damage to the house. It also enables firefighters to fight the fire more
efficiently.

Q: Why does a fire truck go with the ambulance on medical calls?

A: Firefighters are usually cross-trained as EMTs, with most DeKalb firefighters being
licensed paramedics. They provide medical support to Paramedics by obtaining patient
information, carrying equipment, lifting patients, and administering medical care.

Q: What is the best kind of fire extinguisher for in home use?

A: Look for a multi-purpose extinguisher. The rating label will have an ABC rating. This
extinguisher can be used on most household fires.
